Friends of FANA News - May 2004

Recent Events

Friends of FANA sponsored several events in the past few months. Our annual Colombian Fiesta in February was a big success with over 120 people in attendance. Colombian food, dancing by the Colombian folk group El Tayrona, and wonderful crafts and activities for the children highlighted the afternoon.

On a sunny and warm Sunday afternoon in March, Friends of FANA families took part in an Colombian Animal Treasure Hunt at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. Thanks to Anne Crowley and Michael Hall, participants were given a list of clues that lead them through the zoo searching for Colombian animals. Everyone enjoyed snacks and prizes at the end.

Parents of FANA children gathered one Saturday in April at Freddie Mac headquarters for an informative workshop on "A Visit to Colombia? Yes? No? Now? Later?" coordinated by Robin Allen, Adoption Counselor. Robin shared her perspective on "homeland" visits from the standpoint of an adoption professional. Panelists then provided a range of comments and suggestions resulting from their own visits back to Colombia. We plan to have a summary of the session available to our members sometime soon. Many thanks to Shelly Pine for hosting us at Freddie Mac.

Fundraising Update

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our annual campaign for FANA. We raised over $48,000 to date to help support FANA's ongoing operating costs, including foster care for needy children.

Thanks to several special donations, Friends of FANA was able to send six pulsoximeter finger sensors (at a cost of $125 each) to FANA in early March. Additionally, we will send a number of pediatric aerochambers used for respiratory therapy for sick infants. They were paid for by $300 in Girl Scout cookie profits donated by a troop with a child from FANA. Many thanks to everyone who helped with this effort.

Please help FANA; its needs continue to be extraordinary. Donations can be sent to the Friends of FANA at PMB 256, 11654 Plaza America Drive, Reston, VA 20190-4700 marked "for FANA". Every donation is gratefully received by FANA and its children.

News from Bogota

Referrals of children for adoption continue to move very slowly for Colombian adoption programs. This is due to changes within the Colombian welfare system and is being experienced by many Colombian orphanages. We will update you as this situation changes. In the meantime, FANA is looking for a family to adopt a family group of five siblings. If you know someone who might be interested, please contact info@fanafriendsdc.org to be put in touch with FANA.

On a happy note, Elena and Cesar Lopez, Mercedes' daughter and son-in-law, are expecting a baby girl in mid-July. Our congratulations go out to them!
