Sports Teams and Events

Colombianos are passionate about their soccer and soccer matches are hotly contested, emotional events. A number of fine professional Colombian soccer players have come to the United States to play on U.S. teams.

Our local professional men’s soccer team, DC United, occasionally has players from Colombia. Former DC United player, Carlos Llamosa from Colombia, helped DC United win two MLS cups and recently returned to US soccer playing for the Chivas USA team.

If you are looking for Colombian national soccer uniforms for kids, Soccer Kicks at 6029 Wilson Blvd., Arlington VA (703-533-1667) usually has them. Call before you go to check available sizes.

Baseball is growing in popularity in Colombia. Some Colombian players have made it onto major league teams here in the United States. Currently (2006 season), three major leaguers are from Colombia: Orlando Cabrera for the Los Angeles Angels, Edgar Renteria of the Atlanta Braves, and Emiliano Fruto, a pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Over time, eight Colombian natives have played in the major leagues, but that number may be increasing as over 40 Colombians are playing at any time in the minor leagues. For a list of Colombian major league players (past and present), click here and specify Colombia for the country.

To go to a local baseball game, either the Nationals or the Orioles are the best bet or their minor league farm teams. For schedules and tickets, see:

The sport of golf also is growing in popularity in Colombia. Recently, golfer Camilo Villegas from Antioquia has made a strong showing in the US PGA tour.
